Non-Resident Ambassador presents credentials to Putin

Maldives' Non-Resident Ambassador to Russia, Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, has presented his credentials to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The ceremony was rumored to have been canceled twice before. Parliament approved the appointment of Abdul Raheem on March 3, 2025.

Former Chief of Defense Force Abdul Raheem is also the ambassador to Turkey. He was appointed to the position in May, 2024. He retired from the army a month earlier.

After 39 years in the army, he retired at the age of 60.

There has been tensions between Russia and some political leaders in the Maldives. The Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka responded after the country was criticized by former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
