The current Parliament is not a people's parliament but a president's parliament, Galolhu Uthuru MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) has said.
Speaking at the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) campaign hall rally on Thursday night, Mohamed Ibrahim said the Parliament was failing to do its responsibility in making laws and holding the government accountable.
"We get the agenda for the sitting late at night. We face harassment during the debate. It prevents us from fulfilling our legal responsibility. This is not a [People's] parliament. This is a President's parliament," he said.
He noted that the most basic characteristic of the state is to ensure the separation of the three powers, adding that the purpose of holding each power accountable is to prevent negligence in the affairs of the people.
He warned that the people will face the consequences if the government MPs do not do anything for their constituencies and obstruct the work of the MDP.
Mohamed Ibrahim said the MDP will continue to work for the sake of the people.
