MDP aims to begin direct action

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has targeted to begin "direct action" to put the country back on track by stopping President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government from making decisions that are detrimental to the people.

At the MDP national council meeting held on Wednesday night, members expressed concern over mass layoffs of employees, suspension of projects in islands, the government's failure to pay private companies and the failure to fulfil President Muizzu's pledges.

MDP Thimarafushi Constituency President Anwar Ibrahim told the national council that MDP should raise concerns as an opposition party if President Muizzu's manifesto cannot be achieved. He cited the layoffs of employees as the biggest problem.

"Members of this party are being fired from Fenaka and other companies," Anwar alleged.

MDP Maduvvari Constituency President Moosa Ali Manik (Mookay) said the Road Development Corporation (RDC) is trying to fire 500 employees.

"That is why the MDP has the biggest responsibility as this country collapses. I call for direct action," the former Managing Director of RDC said.

"There are no others who are more familiar with this (direct action) than the leaders and members of this party."

The concerns come as Fenaka Corporation has issued notices of dismissal to 731 employees this month.

MDP Chairman and former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail said he could no longer keep watching when a country that could have been taken to the shore of safety is now being thrown into a big pit.

"We find it difficult to remain without action when the people begin to face serious losses. People are being laid off. The prices of goods have gone up many times over. We don't know whether contractors and others in similar posts will be paid in the future. So we must prepare to make the government hear these concerns," he stated.

Five-member committee over firing of employees

The MDP national council, on Wednesday night, formed a committee to seek justice for the dismissed employees of government companies. The committee comprises MDP Vice President Hisaan Hussain, legal director Mahfooz Saeed, Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, former Alifushi MP Mohamed Hussain Rasheed (Bigey) and MDP Kudahuvadhoo Constituency President Shathir Abdul Rahman.

Fayyaz said the committee was formed to prepare for direct action by enhancing the party's work in order to raise the people's voice.

He added that a weekly meeting of the national council would be held to ensure the government knows about the situation in the islands.

"We, the MDP, are the party that will save this country," Fayyaz assured.
