Official discussions on trade between the Maldives and the United States have been launched during Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed's ongoing visit to the US.
According to the Economic Ministry, the visit is aimed at strengthening trade relations between the two countries and attracting investment.
The Maldives delegation includes Minister Saeed, Maldives Ambassador to the US Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, State Trading Organization (STO) Shimad Ibrahim, senior government officials and the US Ambassador to Maldives.
"Minister Saeed participated in the Investment Roundtable organized by the US Chamber of Commerce. The meeting was attended by representatives from the corporate sector," the Economic Ministry stated in a post on X.
The planned trip to the US was first announced by Saeed on February 27 during a campaign speech in Shaviyani Milandhoo ahead of the parliamentary elections.
Saeed stated that a Maldives "trade delegation" would visit the United States.
"On July 10, for the first time, if I am not mistaken, a trade delegation from the Maldives will visit the US capital Washington. That has been facilitated by the US government for the President," he said.
The government is strengthening foreign relations between Maldives and the United States. Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer also visited the US last month and the US has also been sending senior officials to hold talks.
