Power has been restored at the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) factory in Addu city Hulhumeedhoo with the help of police after electricity was cut off amid a protest by fishermen.
Electricity was cut off at the Addu factory on Saturday during the ongoing protest against non-payment for fish catch purchased by MIFCO. Factory workers were forced to sleep outside that night.
MIFCO said an attempt was made to restore electricity to the office and accommodation buildings with the help of police on Sunday afternoon, during which police officers used force due to "the actions of protesters."
Electricity was then cut off again due to the conduct of the protesting fishermen, MIFCO said.
Despite the restoration of power at the factory, the fishermen's protest is continuing.
On Saturday, MIFCO warned that fish purchases will be suspended for three months from boats that obstruct police duties and the efforts of factory workers to resume operations.
But the fishermen vowed not to back down in the face of threats from the government. The protesters were only seeking payments owed by the government, they said.
