The family of a young man who died after being electrocuted by a street lamp in Raa Ungoofaaru has demanded justice.
Hussain Atheek died while undergoing treatment at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on Saturday morning.
He suffered severe injuries during the electrocution, including broken ribs and kidney failure.
The electrocution incident occurred on May 23 while he was trying to rescue an 8-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl.
The two younger children did not sustain serious injuries. However, the 18-year-old autistic youth remained in critical condition till he passed away.
His uncle Hussain Shiyam told Adhadhu that there must be someone negligent in such an incident and the family wants justice.
He added that the family had contacted the in-charge of the police station and the council to share their concerns and to take fair action against anyone responsible.
"Nothing is more precious than a life. There is negligence in this. We have requested to take action against those who were negligent. We will officially submit our figures tomorrow. It is not a compensation we want, but to ensure this does not repeat," Shiyam said.
He added that concerns had also been shared with Fenaka, the company which provides electricity services in the islands.
However, Fenaka told the family that the councils are responsible for managing street lamps.
Shiyam complained that no government officials, including President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, had contacted the family following the tragic incident.
Meanwhile, police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan told Adhadhu that investigations were underway into the incident and that actions would be taken.
