Two men were arrested for threatening two plain-clothes police officers in Male' last night.

The suspects were arrested in relation to an assault case in addition to the intimidation of police officers with knives, police said in a message sent to the media.

They included two men aged 39 and one man aged 35, police said. The case is under investigation.

A video of the arrest has emerged on social media. It shows a man being taken into custody by a large number of police officers. The suspect's shirt appeared to be torn.

The video showed heavy use of force by the police officers in making the arrest. The officers also included two in plain clothes.

An inquiry is underway into police conduct after complaints were submitted about the manner of the arrest, police said in the message sent to the media.

Complaints have been made directly and on social media, Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan told Adhadhu.

In the video, police officers at the scene could be heard telling an onlooker not to film the arrest. Taking videos was an obstruction of police duty, a police officer told the man who tried to take a video.

But Shifan said taking videos was not a problem if it does not hinder police officers.
