Nazra Naseem (Nazu) lost the Fuvahmulah Dhekunu constituency's seat in the parliamentary elections because of her brother, former Vice President Faisal Naseem, her husband Ahmed Mahloof has alleged.
Nazu lost Sunday's election by a margin of 48 votes. The seat was won by People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Ibrahim Hussain.
Mahloof, who was the Youth Minister in the previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government, first made the allegation in a Whatsapp group with senior MDP leaders. Faisal had called constituents and family members and urged them not to vote for Nazu, Mahloof wrote.
After the allegation was reported in the media, Mahloof shared a news article on his official X account, saying that it was the truth despite conceding defeat.
"Like he worked against President [Ibrahim Mohamed] Solih in the presidential election and changed the government, this time has caused the loss of this seat for the MDP by a 48-vote margin."
The reason Faisal has been working against the MDP since the presidential election was because President Solih chose Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Aslam as his running mate instead of the Vice President, Mahloof alleged.
There was also another reason for Faisal opposing the MDP, which the family has now reported to the police, Mahloof wrote.
