Kaashidhoo island council has raised suspicions of arson in the burning down of two boats on the island last night.
Kaashidhoo council President Mohamed Amir told Adhadhu that two boats caught fire while at the docking site and a third smaller boat was also affected.
The boats had been left at the docking site for many days with the engines removed, he said, adding that the council suspects the fire to have been caused deliberately.
A firefighters team from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) traveled to Kaashidhoo from Male' last night.
Police said they received a report of a fire in Kaashidhoo at 12:35 am and that an investigation was underway.
No one was injured in the incident, but the two boats were completely burnt, police said.
