Muhthaz appointed Criminal Justice Advisor to the President

Former Prosecutor General Muhthaz Muhsin has been appointed as the Criminal Justice Advisor to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Muhthaz confirmed to Adhadhu that he was appointed to the post on Tuesday.

The appointment comes after his defeat in the primary for the parliamentary elections held by the ruling coalition on Saturday. He contested for the Dhangethi seat.

Muhthaz was appointed Prosecutor General in 2014 during the government of former President Abdulla Yameen.

However, in late 2016, MPs belonging to the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) filed a no-confidence motion against Muhthaz.

He was removed from the post and was arrested for allegedly forging a false document to arrest Yameen.

He was charged with attempting and participating in an act of terrorism and sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Muhthaz was released after the High Court quashed his conviction following Yameen's defeat in the 2018 presidential election.

Muhthaz, who has been working as a lawyer for the past five years, has represented several activists of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) and PPM.
