The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group has said that it does not intend to lodge complaints against 12 MPs for allegedly taking bribes to join the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
At a press conference by the MDP parliamentary group today, the deputy leader of the parliamentary group MP Hussain Shaheem said the relationship with MPs continues although they had left MDP.
"There has been talk of offers that came to them, some things that happened, the number of political jobs that will be available. So it seems they had to leave under the current situation," he said.
Hussain had previously accused the ruling party of offering bribes to MPs.
When asked whether MDP would refer the cases to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), MP Ali Niyaz said the parliamentary group had not held any such discussions.
"We haven't discussed going to ACC. I don't believe that the parliamentary group will take the lead on that," he said.
Niyaz said the decision to not go to ACC comes from honoring the people who had voted for the MPs for a five-year term.
But he noted that the parliamentary elections were approaching and said that the people would decide on how to deal with the MPs.
