The government has decided to reserve jobs for Maldivians in sectors in which youth have skills and interest.
Announcing the plans at a press conference held at the President's Office, Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim said the decision was made after cabinet deliberations on a paper submitted by the Higher Education Ministry.
Jobs to be reserved for Maldivians include:
- Hairdresser
- Babysitter
- Personal trainer
- Beautician
- Guest relations officer
- Tour guide
- Diver
- Photographers
- Electrical engineers
- Housekeeping manager
- Human resource manager
- Front office manager
- Accountants
- Imams
- Nurses
- Teachers
- Inspectors
- Surveyors
- Site supervisors
- Pilots
The policy is to be implemented in accordance with a schedule, the government said. The relevant ministries will reveal details in the near future, Nazim told the press.
Reserving certain jobs for Maldivians was included in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's manifesto. This was notably a policy that the previous Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) also tried to implement but later stopped due to various reasons.
A large number of foreigners are currently active in the sectors with jobs to be reserved for Maldivians.
