The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has deleted a press release regarding the summoning of President Mohamed Muizzu over corruption allegations.
In 2021, Muizzu was summoned to the ACC in connection with allegations dating back to his tenure as Housing Minister. Following his appearance on March 23, 2021, Muizzu characterized the summons as a politically motivated move.
The statement deleted from the ACC website was issued on March 24, 2021, in response to Muizzu’s remarks. While the press release was also shared on the commission’s official X account, the exact date it was removed from the website remains unclear.
However, an investigation by Adhadhu found that the statement remains preserved on the Wayback Machine, an internet archive. In the statement, the ACC expressed concern over Muizzu’s claims that his summons was an attempt to influence the then-upcoming local council elections.
The commission further noted in the statement that Muizzu had been summoned for corruption-related questioning prior to March 23, 2021, and clarified that the commission was not the source that leaked information of his summons to the media.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the ACC regarding the removal of the statement were unsuccessful, as the commission’s media officer did not respond to phone calls.
