Payments owed to fishers now stand at MVR 140 million, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said.

According to Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, President Muizzu inherited outstanding payments worth millions owed to fishing boats when he assumed office. Over two rounds, payments of MVR 30 million and MVR 160 million have since been cleared, Shiyam said.

But fishers are still owed MVR 140 million, the President said.

"This government during the past three weeks since coming to power has started making payments to fishers that have been delayed from the government for long periods. What's left unpaid to fishers now is MVR 140 million. The relevant agencies of the government are trying to release this money as well to fishers as soon as possible," he said.

Fishers shared their concerns and difficulties with the President during a symposium organized by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources on the occasion of Fisheries Day.

Addressing their greivances, the President said he plans as a priority of the government to expand fisheries to the largest possible area within the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

As pledged to increase the benefits of fisheries, the government will also prioritize developing more facilities such as factories and cold storage and increasing fish products.

During the event, fishers questioned the President concerning his manifesto pledges. The President said he would find ways to fulfill each pledge.

According to the Fisheries Ministry, 40 fishers from across the country as well as other fisheries industry stakeholders participated in the symposium. Discussions took place about fisheries and related sectors, the ministry said.
