The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed its interest in forming a coalition for the upcoming parliamentary elections, the Jumhooree Party revealed on Monday.

At a JP council meeting, discussions were held on a letter sent by MDP to work together in the parliamentary elections.

When asked about the meeting, JP Secretary General Azleen Ahmed told Adhadhu that no decision has been taken yet.

“The MDP has sent a letter, and when [JP leader] Qasim Ibrahim arrived in parliament today, some discussions were held with the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Aslam and PG leader Hon. Mohamed Rasheed Hussain," he said.

The MDP has not yet commented on the matter.

The JP was a coalition partner in the former MDP government led by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. However, the JP did not back Solih in the presidential election.

There are currently two JP members in parliament. Five members were elected to the 19th Parliament on the JP ticket. The MDP currently has 55 members while 65 were elected to the parliament. Earlier, in the 2019 parliamentary elections, the two parties contested separately.
