Ashraf arrested and taken into police custody.

Ahmed Ashraf (Shumba Gong), a social media activist and council member of the Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), was arrested on Tuesday night.

He was arrested around 11 pm near the AJE Emporium in Male’.

The police have yet to comment on the arrest.

Ashraf was arrested on charges of inciting or encouraging assault, his lawyer Mohamed Haleem said. But he has not committed any such act, Haleem said.

“He got information about an assault and went to cover it. The people in the group fled before the police got there. He [Shumba] was taken into police custody from that area,” Haleem said.

Ashraf is likely to be taken to court today for extension of detention, Haleem said.
