Man arrested in connection to child pregnancy case

A man has been arrested in connection to a child pregnancy case reported from a southern island.

A police media official confirmed to Adhadhu that a 26-year-old man has been arrested following initial investigations.

He was arrested on November 14. The suspect has been remanded in custody for 30 days with a court order.

According to a 2009 study by UNICEF, almost one in seven children of secondary school age in the Maldives had been sexually abused at some point in their lives.

The punishment for child sexual abuse is jail terms up to 25 years.
