Maldives condemns bombing of Palestinian hospital

The Maldives government has strongly condemned the Israeli attack on the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza on Tuesday night.

The number of people martyred in the attack - which came after Israel declared war and launched military offensives in the wake of a Hamas attack on October 7 - has not been confirmed.

According to the latest information from Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 500 people were martyred in the attack. Other reports say the figure is closer to 900.

In a statement, the Maldives Foreign Ministry called attacks on hospitals and civilian infrastructures as well as the targeting of civilians “unacceptable” and a clear violation of international humanitarian law.

“The Government of Maldives reiterates its call on the international community to use all possible measures to stop the inhumane attacks against innocent Palestinians and urge the international community to expedite the opening of humanitarian corridors to facilitate delivery of medicines, food supplies and basic needs to the Gaza Strip,” the statement read.

In a post condemning the attack on X today, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid condemned the attack that killed hundreds of people in the strongest terms on behalf of the Maldivian people, noting that attacking hospitals and any civilian infrastructure and targeting civilians were against international humanitarian law.

“We reiterate our call on the international community to use all measures to put an end to these deliberate acts of aggression and to ensure unfettered humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip,” said Shahid, who previously served as president of the UN General Assembly.

In a post on X on Wednesday morning, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also condemned the hospital bombing, calling the targeting of hospitals and non-combatants “a gross violation of international law.”

“I call on the world community to push for a ceasefire and establish humanitarian corridors to ease the plight of Gaza’s residents,” he said.

Israel has been bombing Gaza continuously since October 7. Despite Israel’s claim to be attacking terrorists, the attacks are clearly intended to eliminate Palestinian people living in Gaza.

Hundreds of people who sought shelter in the hospital’s compound were also killed in Israel’s bombing of the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza last night. People sought shelter there with the expectation that an attack on a hospital was unlikely.

More than 1,400 Israelis were killed in the attack by Hamas. The number of people killed in Israel’s retaliation was above 3,000 before last night’s hospital bombing.
