A Maldivian who travelled to Oman after the government announced that Maldivians would be granted on-arrival visas was unable to enter the country.

The Maldives Foreign Ministry revealed last March that Maldivians would be granted on-arrival visas to stay in Oman for two weeks.

But a Maldivian who travelled to Oman with his family was unable to enter the country and forced to return. The man said in a tweet that he was denied entry to Oman and detained at the airport for 12 hours.

The man said he travelled to Oman with a non-refundable hotel booking and was forced to buy tickets for a higher fare to leave the country.

The family called the Maldivian embassies in Saudi Arabia, UK and UAE but did not receive any help, the man said.

The Foreign Ministry was not responding to calls and messages seeking comment on the issue.

A news article published on the Foreign Ministry website about on-arrival visas to Oman has also been deleted.
