The pregnancy of an underaged rape victim from a southern island is under investigation, the police said on Sunday.
The pregnancy of a girl under 18 years of age from an island south of Huvadhoo atoll was reported on Friday, a police media official said.
"The case of a girl under 18 years from a South Police Region island being pregnant was reported to the police on October 6 and the police are investigating the case," the media official said.
As the case is under investigation and involves a minor, the police did not provide any further information.
Sexual abuse of women and children is not commonly reported in the Maldives. The relevant authorities have been urging the public to report such crimes as soon as possible.
So far this year, 220 cases of sexual abuse have been reported to the police.
