Clashes erupted between supporters of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in Kaafu Guraidhoo on Saturday.
PPM supporters gathered near the island harbor on Saturday evening to welcome the opposition presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu who was due to arrive on a campaign visit.
Adhadhu understands that several MDP supporters were also in the harbor area when the violence occurred between the members of the two largest political parties. Video footage of the scene circulated on social media.
Police tried to intervene to stop the violence but videos show people attacking police officers. It is not clear whether anyone was injured or whether any individuals were arrested.
Police have not yet commented on the incident.
Home Minister Imran Abdulla condemned the clashes and said that it is unacceptable to resort to violence while campaigning for a candidate. He urged everyone to refrain from such actions.
Meanwhile, former Home Minister Umar Naseer, who is contesting in the election as an independent candidate, allegedly came under attack in Male' during a campaign rally on Saturday.
Elections Commission (EC) has called on the police to fast-track the investigation into the alleged attack.
