Three people who threw rocks at the police and one person who threatened police officers were arrested at the end of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) campaign rally in Fuvahmulah last night, the police have said.
Seven officers sustained varying degrees of injury during the unrest on Sunday night, all of whom have now been released from hospital after treatment, the police said.
Three people were also arrested during the protest over alleged obstruction of police duties and disobeying orders, the police said. They were all released last night.
One person was arrested for allegedly threatening to harm police officers.
The police also said that two pickups that played loud music and caused a public nuisance during yesterday's protest were towed.
Two people were arrested from among the protesters who gathered at the airport area as President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih arrived in Fuvahmulah yesterday.
Supporters of the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have been protesting during President Solih's campaign visits to islands, calling for the release of the PPM presidential candidate, former President Abdulla Yameen.
Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison after he was found guilty of bribery and money laundering over the lease of Vaavu Aarah, which was part of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal that occurred during his administration.
The Elections Commission has said that Yameen's candidacy cannot be accepted unless the conviction is overturned.
