The Elections Commission (EC) has formally registered The Democrats formed under the leadership of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb said in a tweet today that the party has been registered upon completion of the necessary procedures after the submission by Henveiru Hulhagu MP Hassan Latheef to form The Democrats.

EC members decided unanimously today during the commission's 793rd meeting to include the party in the registry of political parties.

The Democrats was formed by senior members of the 'Fikurrege Dhirun' faction formed by Nasheed after losing the Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) presidential primary. Nasheed also recently left the ruling party along with his loyalists but has yet to sign for the new party.

The party has also announced that its candidate would contest in the upcoming presidential election. But the party has not yet decided its candidate.

The EC authorized the formation of the party on July 2. An inaugural meeting was held on July 5 with more than 500 members and the party adopted its name, color and logo.

The full name of The Democrats as well as the symbolic name Democrats were approved.

The Democrats adopted an 'asterisk' as their logo to symbolize Maldivian palm trees and corals. The party also adopted three colors - baby blue, white and black.

With The Democrats carrying out political activities unceasingly, Nasheed will officially sign up for the party during a rally planned for Thursday night, the newly-formed party announced.
