A suspect has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and beating up an 18-year-old woman inside a house in Male'.

Police told the media that 19-year-old Ahmed Ahil Munaz was arrested on Tuesday night. He was remanded in custody for 15 days.

The incident was reported at 6:00 pm on Tuesday. Police did not say whether the young woman was a Maldivian or a foreign national, and did not provide details of her injuries.

Earlier on October 17, police said an investigation was underway after a 24-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted in Male'.

The woman sought police assistance on the street on the evening of November 16. Police officers helped transport her to the hospital.

Officials from Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) reported the sexual assault to the police after medically evaluating the woman.

So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the assault. Police briefed the media about the incident after reports surfaced on social media.
