The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has decided not to investigate a complaint regarding Home Minister Ali Ihusaan blocking social media activist Midhuam Saud on his official X account.

In a letter addressed to Midhuam, the HRCM stated that it had decided not to pursue the matter as a formal investigation under its mandate. Instead, the commission advised him to submit the complaint to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICOM).

"Please be informed that the commission has decided not to investigate the complaint filed by Midhuam Saud as a separate case under the Human Rights Commission Act, and advises that the matter be submitted to the Information Commissioner’s Office," the letter read.

In a post on X, Midhuam stated that he initially filed the case with the HRCM for a specific purpose: to determine whether the constitutional rights of citizens were being infringed upon.

"If the HRCM does not investigate issues where rights are allegedly being violated, then who will?" he questioned.

The Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to access services without discrimination, regardless of the opinions they express. Various parties have argued that it is unacceptable for high-ranking state officials to exclude specific citizens from official government platforms instead of remaining accountable to the public.
