Mohamed Saeed, who is currently on a hunger strike, has declared that he will only end his protest once the government issues a public guarantee that the persistent public nuisance caused by a drug addict in his neighbourhood will be permanently stopped.

Saeed began his hunger strike yesterday morning inside the Henveiru Police Station. After being informed that he could not remain inside the premises, he moved his protest to Majeedhee Magu, approximately 50 feet away from the station.

Saeed, who also serves as a spokesperson for the Bank of Maldives (BML), spent the night on the street. He has been using a nearby mosque for his basic needs.

"I will end this strike only when a relevant government authority publicly states that the public nuisance caused by the arrested individual will be stopped," Saeed said.

Home Minister Ali Ihusaan visited the site to meet with Saeed, while Prosecutor General (PG) Abbas Shareef also reached out to him via a phone call.

Police spokesperson Ahmed Shiyam told Adhadhu that the authorities would work within the legal framework to take action against the individual in question.

"We will work within the law to resolve this issue. We have previously taken this individual into police custody and initiated measures against him," Shiyam stated.

Saeed noted that the individual, who is struggling with drug addiction, has been causing distress to residents and commuters on Henveiru Kashimaa Hingun and Dhoohimeri Magu.
