Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Former President Mohamed Nasheed and Fayyaz Ismail began a visit to India yesterday.

Adhadhu learned that Fayyaz, the former Economic Minister, left Male' yesterday. Nasheed travelled from the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, to India.

Nasheed had been in Dhaka to participate in the "Bay of Bengal Conversation 2024," a conference which has since concluded.

While the MDP has not officially disclosed the reason for their visit to India, sources indicate that the two leaders are scheduled to meet with senior officials of the Indian government during the trip.

The visit follows the conclusion of the MDP’s fifth congress last Saturday. During the congress, amendments were made to the party’s charter, and the "Big Change" and decentralisation policies were officially passed.

One of the key changes to the party's constitution was the abolition of the post of Party President, establishing the Chairperson as the highest authority within the party. This move is intended to eliminate power struggles between the President and the Chairperson.

Nasheed and Fayyaz are currently operating as a coalition within the MDP. The two leaders have reached an agreement for Fayyaz to contest the presidential election in 2028.
