MDP opens applications for National Council elections

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially opened applications for candidates wishing to contest in its upcoming National Council elections.

Scheduled for November 27, this election marks the first internal vote since the party implemented significant amendments to its Statutes. In addition to the National Council seats, the MDP has also opened applications for several other key leadership positions.

Positions open for election:

  • National Council members representing atolls and cities: To be elected by MDP members residing in the respective atolls and cities.
  • National Council members representing islands and city constituencies: One member per island, with an additional member if the population exceeds 500, and a third if it exceeds 1,000. For city constituencies, two members per constituency, with an additional member for populations over 500, and another for those over 1,000.
  • National Council members for island and city districts.
  • Secretaries for island and city districts.
  • Women’s Secretaries for island and city districts.
  • Youth Secretaries for island and city districts.
  • President of the Women’s Wing.
  • Five National Council members elected from the Women’s Wing. - President of the Youth Wing.
  • Five National Council members elected from the Youth Wing.

Candidates applying for any position that sits on the party’s National Council are required to pay an administrative fee of MVR 1,000 to the party.

Voting is scheduled to take place on November 27 from 2:30 pm to 8:30 pm, with provisional results expected to be announced shortly thereafter. The party plans to release the final results of the election on November 30.

The deadline for individuals to register as party members to be eligible to vote in this election has been set for 2:00 pm on October 20.
