Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef departed for New York last night to attend the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The President's Office said that this visit is a part of the government's ongoing efforts to expand the Maldives' role on the international stage and strengthen diplomatic ties with nations across the globe.
According to the President's Office, the Vice President will participate in various high-level meetings held during the General Assembly. In addition to delivering the official national statement on behalf of the Maldives, he will outline the country's policies regarding major global challenges. He is also scheduled to attend the opening of the General Debate and several side events held on the margins of the assembly.
During his visit to New York, the Vice President will hold bilateral meetings with world leaders to discuss further strengthening relations between the Maldives and their respective countries. The President's Office further noted that he will participate in multilateral forums to seek support and cooperation for the Maldives in critical areas such as climate change and sustainable development.
The UN General Assembly session serves as one of the biggest global platforms for fostering international cooperation and deliberating on solutions to pressing global issues.
The Vice President, accompanied by a high-level government delegation, is scheduled to return to Malé on September 16 upon the conclusion of the visit.
