Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has announced his decision to contest for the position of Vice President of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
Shiyam, who currently serves as one of the party's six vice presidents, confirmed his intention to seek re-election during an interview with Dhauru.
In addition to Shiyam, several high-profile figures have declared their candidacy for the vice-presidential slots. These include Baarashu MP Ibrahim Shujau, Nilandhoo MP Fathimath Saudha, Maafannu Central MP Asma Rasheed, and her son, Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef. They are joined by Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu and Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed.
With Shiyam entering the race, an election will be required to determine the party's leadership structure. The vote is expected to be conducted through an open ballot process.
The election for the PNC vice presidency will not involve the general membership. Instead, the right to vote is reserved exclusively for the members of the party’s senior council.
President Mohamed Muizzu currently serves as the Leader and President of the PNC. According to the party’s charter, the President of the Maldives automatically assumes the role of Party Leader when the PNC is in power, meaning no election is required for the top post.
The current vice presidents of the PNC are Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, former Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon, Fisheries Minister Shiyam, Economic Minister Saeed, MP Shujau, and the CEO of the Local Government Authority (LGA), Mohamed Nimal.
