The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a yellow alert for several atolls, including the Greater Male' region, warning of deteriorating weather conditions and strong winds.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected between 07:30 and 11:30 this morning in the area spanning Kaafu Atoll to Alif Dhaal Atoll. Forecasters predict wind speeds could gust up to 45 mph during these periods.
The capital, Male', has experienced continuous rainfall since early dawn.
Widespread rain was also recorded across much of the country yesterday, leading to flooding in several islands of Addu Atoll and causing damage to residential properties.
The severe weather and high winds on Thursday night caused two iron vessels anchored near Male' to drag their anchors, resulting in them drifting into the Male' sea wall and the Sinamale' Bridge. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed that both vessels took on water and have since sunk.
