The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) today forecasted a period of adverse weather conditions across the country over the next three days.

The MET Office informed Adhadhu that rain is expected across a large part of the Maldives during this period, with heavy downpours likely in some areas.

A white alert has been issued from Shaviyani Atoll to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, with the MET Office forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds of up to 40 mph.

Furthermore, the MET Office predicts that winds will strengthen in the northern and central atolls starting tomorrow, with average speeds ranging between 15 and 20 mph.

Between 8:00 am yesterday and 8:00 am today, Male' recorded the highest rainfall at 65.3 mm. Other areas recording more than 50 mm of rainfall included Baa Dharavandhoo, Alif Dhaal Maamigili, and Faafu Nilandhoo.

The MET Office attributed the current spell of bad weather to cloud formations over the Maldives region caused by wind convergence. Additionally, officials noted that the prevailing Southwest Monsoon is also contributing to the unsettled conditions.

The MET Office had previously forecasted that due to the El Niño phenomenon, rainfall in the northern and central atolls is expected to be higher than average from September through November.
