Raajje TV filed a formal complaint with the police yesterday following reports that a group is plotting an attack against Amir Saleem, the station's Head of Programs and Coordination.
In a letter addressed to Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed, Raajje TV stated that after receiving information about the plot from a credible source, the details were made public by an X account operating under the name "Hassan Kurusee."
The post by the Hassan Kurusee account alleged that information had been received regarding payments made to individuals to carry out attacks against both Amir Saleem and Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo).
Raajje TV noted that they had previously reported a death threat against Amir to the police last year. That threat was issued alongside a photograph of him speaking during a journalists' protest against the Media Control Bill.
According to the station, the police had provided no updates on the investigation into the previous death threat until last Monday, when they informed the broadcaster that the case had been filed and closed.
"The station is deeply concerned that such a dangerous threat against Amir has emerged just one day after being notified that the previous case was filed," Raajje TV stated.
Highlighting a history of politically motivated attacks against the station, Raajje TV emphasized that they treat every threat with the utmost seriousness. The broadcaster recalled past incidents where the station was set on fire, staff were physically assaulted, and numerous threats of violence were issued.
During former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, Raajje TV faced repeated threats and was slapped with heavy fines on multiple occasions. The station’s premises were previously torched, and its equipment has been frequently vandalized. Furthermore, in 2018, the station was forced to suspend its broadcasting for a day following warnings issued by the Maldives Broadcasting Commission.
