Police have visited the residence of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to serve a summons for questioning regarding an ongoing investigation.
Adhadhu understands that police officers visited the residence twice last night to deliver the summons. The first visit occurred around 7:00 pm, followed by a second attempt at approximately 7:30 pm.
Sources indicate that the police are seeking to record a statement from Yameen for an active case. However, reliable sources have confirmed that Yameen refused to accept the summons.
When contacted for comment, a police spokesperson stated they would "look into it" but provided no further details.
The attempt to summon Yameen follows a statement by Home Minister Ali Ihusaan, who revealed that he had requested the Maldives Police Service to clarify information regarding allegations made by the former president concerning a fire at the Maafannu Green Building in December 2024.
In a Facebook post, Ihusaan stated that a joint investigation by the Maldives Police Service and international experts concluded that the fire, which destroyed buildings housing three government ministries, was caused by an electrical short circuit.
Ihusaan noted that police reported no criminal evidence or suspects were identified during the investigation.
However, during a People’s National Front (PNF) rally on September 5, 2026, Yameen alleged that the buildings were intentionally set on fire. He further claimed that the police are aware that the perpetrator is an individual close to President Mohamed Muizzu.
The December 2024 fire completely destroyed the building housing the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Construction, and the Ministry of Environment, resulting in the loss of critical documents and servers.
