President Mohamed Muizzu has failed to hold a press conference for eight consecutive weeks, backtracking on his pledge to meet with the media every Monday.
President's Office Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) has yet to respond to inquiries from Adhadhu regarding why the President did not meet with journalists this week.
Shareef previously stated that the President would meet with the press as his schedule permits. However, journalists are expressing growing concern as eight weeks have passed without a single briefing.
Muizzu last held a press conference on June 29. Notably, of the eight weeks that have since elapsed, seven of those Mondays were regular working days not affected by public holidays.
The President initially committed to holding weekly press conferences starting in March during his Presidential Address delivered on February 5.
Despite this commitment, he has refrained from meeting the press in recent weeks, even while being stationed in Malé. His last media appearance also followed a three-week hiatus.
In the 27 weeks since the weekly press briefings were scheduled to begin on March 2, President Muizzu has only met with the media on eight occasions.
Before the weekly briefing initiative began in March, the President held a press conference on May 3, 2024—marking only the second such event of his administration. His first formal press conference since taking office was held on December 5, 2023.
