The land required to develop a yacht marina in Haa Alif Uligan was officially handed over to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) yesterday.
At a special ceremony held for the occasion, the land handover agreement was signed by the President of the Uligan Island Council, Ahmed Asadullah, on behalf of the council. Chief Executive Officer Hussain Shafeeq signed the agreement on behalf of MPL.
Speaking to Public Service Media (PSM) following the signing, Shafeeq said that physical work on the marina project is scheduled to commence within this month.
He further detailed that MPL plans to develop a marina with a capacity to accommodate 18 yachts. However, Shafeeq expressed his vision for the facility to expand in the future, growing alongside the business to become a world-class destination.
While the development of the yacht marina has been entrusted to MPL, the company has yet to disclose the full technical details and total cost of the project.
Stakeholders in the maritime industry have long expressed concerns over the lack of adequate harbors or dedicated marinas for safaris and yachts operating in the Maldives. Addressing these concerns was a key pledge made by President Mohamed Muizzu.
In line with this, Muizzu had also committed to developing a safe harbor for yachts and safaris in Dhiyaneru Lagoon, a project initiated by the previous administration. However, that project has yet to see progress.
