About 90 employees working at the Addu City branch of Fenaka Corporation have been dismissed from their positions.
Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar has alleged that the mass termination of these 90 employees was carried out under the direction of three MPs representing Addu City: Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, Ibrahim Didi (IB), and Ismail Nizar.
"I have received information from Fenaka management that these employees were dismissed following consultations with MP Ibrahim Didi, MP Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, and MP Ismail Nizar. It is unacceptable for elected representatives to encourage such cruelty against the citizens," Nizar stated in a post on X.
Providing further details on the matter, Nizar noted that those terminated were employees below the supervisor level at Fenaka’s Addu operations.
"There is work to be done every day. These are the people providing utility services to Addu. They weren't dismissed because there was a lack of work," Nizar said.
He further argued that if Fenaka is overstaffed, the priority for layoffs should be the idle staff at the company’s head office in Male'. Nizar also claimed that the majority of those dismissed in Addu were individuals who do not support the current administration.
"Most of them [do not support the government]. They kept their own [PNC] people in various positions and dismissed these workers. I received information from within Fenaka last night that these dismissals occurred with the consent of the PNC MPs from Addu City. Something of this magnitude would not happen without their knowledge," Nizar added.
In addition to Addu, employees of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) across the Maldives are currently being terminated. The companies have cited a circular issued by the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) as the justification for these actions.
