The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) announced today that Fire and Rescue Services responded to 12 fire incidents across the country over the past week.
According to the MNDF, a total of 23 incidents were reported last week, of which 12 were classified as fire-related emergencies.
Statistics from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for 2024 indicate that the Male' region remains the most prone to such incidents. Notably, 77 percent of all fire incidents recorded this year occurred within the Greater Male' area.
In addition to fire responses, the MNDF conducted four medical evacuations over the past week. Personnel also attended to one chemical leak and successfully carried out rescue operations in five separate incidents.
Out of the 23 incidents reported last week, the MNDF Male' Area Command attended to 16 cases. The Northern Area Command responded to one incident, while the Central and Southern Area Commands each attended to three cases.
Data shows that a total of 83 fire incidents were reported in 2024.
The increasing frequency of disasters has led to a rise in emergency expenditure. In 2024, disaster response costs exceeded MVR 10 million, a sharp increase compared to the MVR 6 million spent in 2023 and the MVR 3 million recorded in 2022.
