A resident of Galolhu Funfalhuge has said that last night’s fire on the fifth floor of the building was caused by a power bank catching fire in one of the bedrooms.
The woman who lives in the room with her husband and two children told Adhadhu that the fire broke out when a plugged-in power bank on the bed "exploded." She noted that the fire caused damage to other rooms in the apartment, the living room, and even extended to the sixth floor.
"A power bank blasted. It is a three-bedroom apartment, but the fire was contained to one room. I am not entirely sure of the current state of the other rooms, but photos show the living room is heavily blackened by smoke. However, everything in the affected bedroom has been destroyed beyond use," she said.
Her 13-year-old child is a Grade 8 student at Imaduddin School, while her 19-year-old is preparing for higher education. The 13-year-old is currently receiving treatment at the hospital due to smoke inhalation from the incident.
The fire completely destroyed the student’s books and school supplies, as well as all the belongings of the 19-year-old and the couple that were kept in the room.
Last night, 25 people received treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and three others at ADK Hospital for smoke inhalation. Two children remain under medical care.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is currently providing assistance to over 58 residents.
