The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has accepted responsibility for damages caused to Kamil Didi School during an altercation that broke out at the Hulhumale' North polling station during the party's internal elections on July 11.
Education Minister Ismail Shafeeu told Adhadhu that the PNC has agreed to compensate the school for damages sustained to a glass door and the school's sound system.
"One glass door and two buttons on the sound system mixer were damaged. The PNC has taken responsibility and provided assurances that they will provide compensation," the minister said.
Police are currently investigating the brawl involving PNC members at Kamil Didi School, with three individuals arrested in connection to the case so far.
During the unrest, an elderly PNC member suffered a panic attack, while several other members sustained various degrees of physical injuries.
Footage circulating on social media shows some participants of the brawl physically assaulting and pushing police officers, as well as disobeying orders and obstructing law enforcement from performing their duties.
Allegations have surfaced that the son of Hulhumale' North MP Hussain Shareef (Hussainbe) was involved in the violence. Additionally, several staff members from the President's Office and political appointees under President Mohamed Muizzu were seen present during the altercation.
While some PNC members allege that the violence was instigated by a group sent by MP Hussain Shareef, the lawmaker has denied these accusations.
