Former chef Mohammed Abid has been convicted of killing a waiter in a fight inside the Khanji Restaurant in Hulhumale'.
Last Wednesday, Abid was convicted of the murder of MD Shamim, a Bangladeshi waiter who worked there. The punishment will be determined after the testimony of Shamim's heirs.
MD Shamim was killed on April 16, 2023, after an argument between Abid inside the restaurant kitchen. Shamim died of injuries to his face and chest.
According to the body's medico-legal report, Shamim died of injuries sustained under his left eye. The chest injury was also sustained from the same attack, the report said.
After the attack, Abid was arrested while in hiding on the beach in Hulhumale' Phase 2. He was arrested about nine hours after the attack. Police had also released a photograph of him.
Those who know Abid say he has a short temper. He had previously had a fight inside the restaurant. He told the court that he was acting in self-defence.
However, the court determined that the testimony of the witnesses and the circumstances of the case were reliable. The judge also said that Abid's self-defence argument was fabricated.
