Transparency Maldives has called for urgent measures to ensure the rights of migrant workers following the deaths of eight Bangladeshi nationals in the Maldives within a span of just 10 days.
Bangladeshi media outlets, citing the country's High Commission in the Maldives, reported that eight Bangladeshi citizens died in various incidents between July 25 and August 3.
Transparency Maldives noted that these fatalities included workplace accidents, serious health complications, and cases of suicide. Those who passed away during these 10 days were aged between 21 and 45.
In a statement, the organization asserted that these deaths should not be viewed as isolated incidents, but rather as a reflection of systemic failures in ensuring the rights and health safety of migrant workers.
The statement urged authorities to rigorously enforce labour protection laws and to increase inspections of workplace safety standards.
Furthermore, the organization called for improved access to healthcare and mental health support for migrants, as well as decisive action to end the systemic abuse and negligence they face.
Transparency Maldives highlighted that while many workers are deprived of their rights, there are currently no adequate avenues for them to seek justice.
The organization further noted that it is the responsibility of employers to provide a safe working environment and decent living conditions. But they stressed that state institutions often hesitate to take action against those who fail to fulfil these obligations.
