The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has selected its candidates to contest for seats on the Local Government Authority (LGA) Board representing city mayors, island council presidents, and Women's Development Committee (WDC) presidents.
The MDP candidates for the upcoming LGA Board election are Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif, Noonu Manadhoo Council President Ali Zafir, and Laamu Gan WDC President Maryam Neena.
In the internal MDP election held among island council presidents, Ali Zafir secured the nomination after competing against Raa Rasgetheemu Council President Hassan Rashad, Baa Thulhaadhoo Council President Ahmed Afrah, and Laamu Gan Council President Afsal Jaufar.
The nomination for the WDC representative was won by Laamu Gan WDC President Maryam Neena. She contested against the WDC presidents of Raa Dhuvaafaru, Fuvahmulah City, Male' City, and Gaaf Alif Kondey.
Meanwhile, Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif secured the MDP ticket for the city council seat without a contest, as he was the sole applicant for the position.
The deadline for submitting nominations for the LGA Board election is 12:00 pm today. Voting is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 8, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, with the final results expected to be announced on August 11.
The current LGA Board is composed of Finance Minister and board President Hassan Zareer, Vice President Fathimath Niuma, CEO Mohamed Nimal, and board members Fathimath Zeena Ali, Mohamed Azad, and Azha Zameer.
