Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim has returned to the Maldives following a period abroad that coincided with rumours of his potential arrest on criminal charges.
Police began investigating Nazim in May. Around the same time, the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) submitted a resolution to remove him from his position as Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
The PNC said that the move to oust Nazim from the Deputy Speaker’s post was due to his alignment with a specific political ideology and efforts to undermine the stability of the institution.
However, Nazim resigned on the day he was scheduled to be removed and vehemently denied the PNC’s allegations.
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson, former President Mohamed Nasheed, previously claimed that the PNC’s efforts to remove Nazim were triggered by his involvement in a move to switch party allegiances.
