The Bangladesh Ambassador to the Maldives, Dr. Nazmul Islam, has announced that efforts are underway to establish a prisoner exchange agreement between the two nations.

In a press statement released on Friday, Dr. Nazmul said that the drafting of the prisoner transfer agreement is currently in its final stages. He further noted that special priority is being given to expedite the signing and implementation of the accord.

The Ambassador explained that under this agreement, Bangladeshi nationals currently incarcerated in Maldivian prisons could be transferred to facilities in their home country on humanitarian grounds.

During the process of finalizing the agreement, the Ambassador visited Maafushi Prison to assess the condition of Bangladeshi inmates. Dr. Nazmul emphasized that the purpose of the visit was to ensure the protection of their rights and to provide necessary assistance.

There are currently 44 Bangladeshi nationals held at Maafushi Prison. Among them, 34 are serving sentences, while the remaining 10 are in remand.

Following his meeting with the inmates, the Ambassador held discussions with senior officials from the Maldives Correctional Service. During these talks, Dr. Nazmul requested that the authorities ensure the rights of the prisoners are upheld and that they are provided with all essential amenities.
