Former Attorney General (AG) Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed has been nominated as the Maldivian Ambassador to the European Union and Belgium.
Dhiyana’s nomination, which follows her recent advocacy in support of the government’s position during the referendum vote, was sent to Parliament today. Her nomination has now been forwarded to the relevant committee for further review.
Dhiyana had not previously held a position within the current administration. She was appointed as Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the referendum, alongside Adam Shareef and Thoriq Ibrahim, who were removed from the Cabinet.
Until the referendum, Dhiyana was known as a prominent critic of the current administration. However, since she began campaigning for a "Yes" vote in the referendum, she has actively defended government policies. This shift in stance has drawn public criticism toward her.
The government has also faced public backlash for appointing three individuals to senior positions within the Foreign Ministry, despite previous pledges not to increase the number of political appointments.
