A foreign national who sustained severe burns in a massive fire at the Faafu Feeali fuel jetty has passed away.
The blaze, which originated on a fuel boat, spread rapidly, destroying four additional vessels and the island’s ice plant.
In a message to the media, the police confirmed that the victim died on May 4 while undergoing hospital treatment. Authorities further noted that his remains were repatriated to his home country yesterday.
The deceased was a Bangladeshi national. A Maldivian man was also injured in the incident; however, the Bangladeshi national was evacuated to Male' via sea ambulance on the day of the fire due to the severity of his injuries.
Following the incident on April 9, Feeali Council Member Ahzam Abdulla told Adhadhu that the fire completely gutted the fuel boat, two large fishing vessels, and a smaller boat. He added that the island’s ice plant and all its equipment were also reduced to ashes.
"The ice plant is beyond repair; a new one will have to be installed. Everything was burnt. Two of the island's primary fishing vessels were almost entirely destroyed—burnt to the point that they are no longer usable," he said.
