The Health Ministry has expressed concern over the increasing trend of mocking persons with disabilities on social media, stating that it condemns such actions in the strongest possible terms.
In a statement released Thursday, the ministry noted that photos and videos of persons with disabilities are being circulated on social media platforms accompanied by derogatory comments that ridicule them and undermine their dignity.
"This Ministry and the Council for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are deeply concerned by these actions and condemn them in the harshest terms," the statement read.
The ministry further emphasized that the right to non-discrimination, equal opportunity, and respect for persons with disabilities is a fundamental right guaranteed under the law.
"Respecting the dignity and autonomy of persons with disabilities, and ensuring they have equal and independent opportunities to participate in social activities, is a right they are entitled to," the statement added.
The ministry highlighted that mocking persons with disabilities on social media serves as a barrier to building an inclusive society. It further noted that such behavior inflicts profound negative impacts on both the individuals and their families.
"We appeal to all members of the public to refrain from repeating such acts and to join hands in the state's efforts to ensure and protect the rights of persons with disabilities," the statement concluded.
