The High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian, has inspected the ongoing development of Gan International Airport, a project funded by a loan from the Export-Import (EXIM) Bank of India.
The High Commissioner arrived in Addu yesterday to review the progress of the airport's expansion. He was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development, as well as representatives from Renatus Projects, the contractor undertaking the development.
The Gan International Airport expansion is a MVR 458 million project initiated by the previous administration as part of a broader plan to transform Addu City into an economic hub. The contract for the project was signed with Renatus on March 6, 2023.
The project aims to bolster tourism in the southern region by upgrading the airport with modern facilities capable of serving 1.5 million passengers annually. The scope of work includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, duty-free shops, restaurants, lounges, and other essential amenities.
Under this project, the airport will also be equipped with cargo facilities featuring cold storage, a new control tower, a fire station, and upgraded road networks and parking areas.
