The Criminal Court has handed down lengthy prison sentences to three individuals found guilty of severing a man's finger.
The case is related to an incident on June 23, 2024, in a seventh-floor apartment at Maafannu Bagufadigge, where the left pinky finger of Abdulla Rajeeh was severed. The state had initially pressed charges against five individuals in connection with the assault.
The defendants in the case were Ahmed Saif Waheed, Ahmed Zayan, Mohamed Naushan Hussain, Ali Sami and Mohamed Nafah.
Saif was convicted of the direct act of severing Rajeeh’s finger. The Criminal Court sentenced him to 15 years in prison; however, after accounting for time served in custody, he is required to serve a remaining term of 12 years, 11 months, and 24 days.
Naushan and Sami were found guilty of complicity in an assault with a sharp object resulting in the loss of a limb. According to the prosecution, Sami had ordered the finger to be cut, while Naushan held Rajeeh’s fingers in place during the act. Both were sentenced to 10 years in prison, with a remaining term of seven years, 11 months, and 24 days to be served.
The prosecution further alleged that Nafah had heated the knife used in the assault before bringing it to the scene. However, he was acquitted of the charges as the state failed to prove that his actions were committed with criminal intent.
The charges against Zayan stated that he arrived at the scene after the finger had been severed but failed to provide any assistance to the victim. He was sentenced to three months in prison. The case was presided over by Criminal Court Judge Mohamed Misbah.
